| Englewood Illinois 1886 Evil walked right into the small community and turned the town upside down. A man who came to be known as "Dr. Death" came into town and seduced his way into millions of dollars, and murder. It began with Holmes walking into a drugstore, owned then by an elderly woman who was caring for her dying husband. Her name was Mrs. Holton and she desperatly needed the help, so she hired Dr. Holmes on as the new pharmacist. She did not check credentials, otherwise she would have known that he had mixed a prescription in Philadelphia that had resulted in the death of woman there. After the death of her husband, Dr. Holmes agreed to buy the drugstore, he had already been keeping the books and knew all there was to know. But the elderly woman refused. Dr. Holmes made her an offer, that if she agreed to allow him to buy the business, he would gladly let her stay in the rooms where she and her husband had lived most of their lives. She agreed to his deal, but when Dr. Holmes refused to pay her the following month, Mrs. Holton took him to court. Shortly thereafter she disappeared. When residents asked of her whereabouts, Dr. Holmes told them that she had moved to California, too distraught after her husband's death to live in the rooms any longer. Her body was never found. Shortly fater Mrs. Holten vanished, Holmes married a young woman from the town. It became evident that he was not the marrying kind and tried to divorce her, but she had become pregnant and therefore divorce was not possible. It was later found that Dr. Holmes real name was Mudgett, Holmes was merely one of a string of alias names he had been using to further his own evil plans. Holmes eventually bought and designed a castle, a literal castle of horrors. The construction men he had hired to build his castle of death were all cheated out of their wages, some had vanished much like Mrs. Holton and others tired of Dr. Holmes rudeness and abusive nature and simply walked off the job. Inside the castle were nightmares. Stretching tables, a disection table, tunnels and hallways that narrowed into smaller passages and outlets. Huge vats for boiling or melting down, a number of torture devices, the list went on and on. When all was said and done, Herman Mudgett, aka Henry H Holmes had murdered countless women he had seduced, he murdered the children of a business partner and had stolen or embezzeled money from people who had trusted him. The "good" doctor seemed to believe he was a God and therfore was untouchable. He had truly brought evil into Chicago, an evil that is still talked about to this day. |
