FELINE URINARY TRACT DISORDER
This Page is Dedicated to Outlaw-Bandit Born December26th-2001 Died January 24th-2004 ------------------------------------------------------ Feline Urological Syndrome is actually a more generalized term for a collection of problems including the following conditions; Cystitus-Inflammation of the bladder or urethra Urethritis-Infection of the urethra or bladder Urinary Tract Cancer-A tumor in the bladder or urethra Trauma to the urinary tract-Falling, Hit by a Car, ect. Urethral Plugs-Soft, malleable material containing minerals, cellular debris or proteins. Many things can help to contribute to the latter. Viruses, bacteria, physical inactivity, stress, diet, increased water intake or urine retention. ---------------------------------------- This disease can happen to cats at any age albeit unlikely in younger cats. FLUTD is also far more invasive of male cats than females and has been known to cause death in slow painful stages. It is difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of this disease, but there are things to watch for to alert you that your pet might be suffering from this illness. ----------------------------------------------- Urinating outside of the litterbox Straining to urinate Frequent Urination with little Urine discharge Hard or Full bladder Licking of the genital area more frequently Blood in the urine ------------------------------------------------- If you suspect that your cat has ANY of these symptoms, contact your vet immediately When a cat cannot urinate, the kidneys become unable to remove serious and deadly toxins from the blood and maintain fluid and electrolyte balance. When this happens, the cat can die within 48 hours due to the high level of toxins in the blood, which will result in heart failure.

If your cat shows the symptoms listed above, contact your local vet and take your cat in ASAP Your vet will take a urine sample from your cat and test it for the presence of crystals and determine the ph levels which if too high will result in death of your cat. They may also take X-rays to look for stones or blockages in the urethra or bladder areas. If your cat does in fact have FLUTD, he or she may need immediate catheterization or surgery to remove any blackages or plus the vet may find. Since dehydration is such a common factor in these cases, the vet will also give them an intravesnous electrolyte balancing agent. Your cat will then be placed on a course of drug therapy to acidify the urine, help combat bacterial infections and relieve pain and or restore baldder function. A diet will most likely be prescribed by your vet that will help to promote good urinary tract health. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This illness is VERY serious. It can kill your pet within 48 hours, and make NO mistake that they suffer greatly and are under extreme duress while waiting to die. If you love your cat, and he/she has any of these signs, get them to your local vet immediately.

Male cats are far more susceptible to this illness, however it can also affect female cats though rare. If these signs appear in your cat, male or female, seek help immediately. I cannot say this enough. It is not fun to watch your loved ones suffer, human or animal, the pain is still just as real. Take the necessary precautions and make certain that your pet is a healthy and happy one. Refrain from allowing your cat to go outdoors and inspect in neighboring yards. Always make certaint hat your litter box is changed regularly and that fresh litter is added. If you have multiple cats in your home I suggest a litterbox change once daily to be on the safe side.
