| NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET ----------------------------------------------- Wes Craven directed this series of hits, and in my opinion couldnt have done a better job had he really put thought into it. Elm Street, home of teenagers like Nancy Thompson and her boyfriend (Johnny Depp) Nancy is having some bad dreams, some very bad and very deadly dreams about a man who has razor like fingers and is badly burnt. This is because he isnt just a bad dream, he is Fred Krueger and he is pure evil. Fred Krueger once lived on Elm Street, he was a ruthless child murderer who was caught and brought to trial, but due to a technicality, was set free. So as any good small townsfolk would do, they converged on old Freddy and burned him to a crisp. Just before he died, Freddy vowed that he would resturn to haunt them and all of their children. And that was exactly what he did. As it would happen, Nancy's father, the town cop had taken part in the burning of Freddy Krueger, and now poor Nancy is plagued with the crazed claw killer in her dreams. Heather Lagenkamp did a remarkable job at screaming and John Saxon did a good job playing her father who refused to believe right up until the end that Freddy was back, returned as he had promised. Depp did a good job in his dying role, small as that was, and Robert Englund brought the character of Freddy Krueger right up in your face. This is an excellent movie that will leave you wide friggin awake and watching over your shoulder. |

| NEAR DARK ------------------------ This movie was released right along with The Lost Boys in 1987 starred Lance Henrickson and Adrian Pasdar. It was based heavily off of Anne Rice's novels about Vampires and was just as explosive as The Lost Boys was. Bill Paxton (Twister,Pass The Ammo) starred as the sadistic vampire Severen, and did an excellent job, as did all of the actors in this movie. Henrickson does an unimaginable good job playing the role of Jesse, and his "exploding" in the sunlight scene was almost as real looking as it could be without having actually blown him up. This movie had the same mystique as Lost Boys except this movie was much darker. This movie, much as Lost Boys did portrayed the otherwise gothic, sensual and seducing Vampires as drug addicted, abusive and downright mean and nasty creatures who were interested in nothing more than the evil of the dark side. The 80's spawned several movies that focused on drug addiction, abuse and alcohol abuse. But Near Dark took it one step farhter and as a result came out with an excellent Vampire movie that was so close with Lost Boy's popularity it was almost insane. If you have yet to see this classic masterpiece, see it. Anchor Bay has a newer release on dvd that just kicks serious ass, a must see for the 80's vampire movie fan |
